PATAPAMPA 0325 1 mountain bike peru

Patapampa, downhill to Colca

The ride begins at 4,900 meters (16,000 ft) above sea level. From the highest point, Patapampa Pass, you can choose between descending via singletrack trails or following the paved road. Both options eventually lead to Chivay, the gateway to the Colca Valley.

Of course, we prefer the more challenging option, so the road is not really in our plans. The singletrack offers an enjoyable intermediate-level descent: not overly steep, mostly smooth and flowing, and perfectly manageable on a hardtail bike. Depending on the trail variation you choose, the descent from Patapampa to Chivay typically takes between one and two hours.

Because the network of trails can be confusing, hiring a local guide is always a good idea. We highly recommend Pedro Samayani, who can help organize everything you need for a safe and enjoyable ride in the area.

Once you reach the valley floor, several options open up. You can continue along the main road toward the traditional village of Yanque, or cross through Chivay and follow the gravel road on the opposite side of the Colca River. This alternative creates an excellent loop for riders staying in Chivay, while also providing several finishing points along the route for those continuing their journey elsewhere in the valley.

The combination of breathtaking mountain scenery, flowing trails, traditional Andean villages, makes this one of the most rewarding mountain bike experiences in southern Peru
