Asia Fog Oases

Riding the Legendary Coastal Lomas

The Asia Valley lies nearly 100 kilometers south of Lima. Despite its name, “Asia” does not refer to the continent but originates from an ancient local language. Reaching the valley requires a drive of approximately two hours from the city.

The Lomas or Fog Oases are a true gift for mountain bikers. These unique seasonal ecosystems are found almost exclusively along the Peruvian coast, with only a few similar formations extending into northern Chile. After Pachacámac, this is arguably one of the finest places to ride in the region.

From the starting point, the first section crosses dry terrain and gradually climbs toward the highlands. An early start is highly recommended. During the summer months, the heat can be brutal, and climbing under the midday sun can quickly become exhausting.

Once you reach the pass, the landscape opens dramatically. The key is to keep as far left as possible, where you will eventually connect with the best singletrack. From that point on, simply follow the trail, lomeando, a local expression that describes flowing naturally along the contours and slopes of the hills.

Expect a route filled with enjoyable climbs, fast cross-country sections, and some thrilling descents. The terrain changes dramatically with the seasons: bone dry and dusty during summer, lush and surprisingly green during winter when the coastal fog nourishes the hills.

If you’re planning to ride during the summer, carrying at least three liters of water, along with sufficient food, is absolutely essential. The route is demanding, exposure to the sun is constant, and proper preparation can make the difference between an unforgettable adventure and a very long day.
