San Ramón is known as the gateway to the Chanchamayo Valley. At the end of the 19th century, Italian, German, Austrian, and Chinese settlers arrived in the region and established new communities on lands traditionally inhabited by the Asháninka people. During the early 20th century, roads were gradually built, connecting Peru’s capital with the Central Jungle.

Today, the valley is a thriving and dynamic agricultural region, renowned for its abundant production of food crops and, above all, its excellent coffee.

In less than seven hours by road from Lima, travelers can cross the Andes and reach the lush landscapes of Peru’s Central Jungle.

San Ramón serves as the gateway to numerous destinations, including Satipo, Bayoz, Pozuzo, Oxapampa, Pampa Hermosa, Villa Rica, and Monobamba. Each of these jungle towns possesses its own unique character and charm. Close to San Ramón lies El Tirol. While modern urban life flourishes in the city, the surrounding countryside remains dedicated to agriculture.

During some of our excursions, we ventured beyond the traditional routes and discovered a trail descending from the highlands to the base of a spectacular waterfall more than 100 meters high. After a refreshing swim in its cool waters, we enjoyed the climb back along the scenic hiking trail.

For the best experience, we recommend visiting on weekdays and avoiding weekends or public holidays, when the area can become crowded. Arriving early allows you to enjoy the trail in a quieter, more pristine setting.
